The SAR awards the ROTC Medal to foster the principle of the “citizen-soldier”, exemplified by the Minutemen of Revolutionary War days. This award is presented by a Chapter, a State Society, or the National Society to ROTC or JROTC cadets who are selected for having a high degree of merit with respect to leadership qualities, military bearing and general excellence.

JROTC Enhanced Program
Allows Outstanding Cadets in the San Diego area to compete at the local, State and National level. Selection criteria include demonstrated leadership potential, military bearing, and scholastic achievement. Each cadet applicant for the Enhanced Program must submit an original 500-700 word essay on a topic designated by the ROTC/JROTC & Services Academy Liaison Committee. In addition to meeting the same criteria as the SAR Bronze ROTC Medal Program, the cadet must be enrolled in the 3rd year of a 4 year JROTC Program, or 2nd year of a 3 year JROTC Program (must be a junior). The cadet must also be in the Top 10% of their JROTC Class and Top 25% of their High School Class. Recommendations must also be submitted by the Senior Military Instructor and the Principal.
The San Diego Chapter awards a medal, certificate and $250 to the winner. Submissions must be made to SDSAR by February 1.

San Diego Cadet Wins Local and State JROTC Award
Harini Akurathi of the Scripps Ranch High School was presented our Chapter’s Junior ROTC Enhanced award for 2023 by our Sargent-at-Arms, Gary Newton and Treasurer Jim McAdory. She also won the CASSAR state level award and her submission has been forwarded to NSSAR for the national award judging.
There were some 300 people in at the Scripps Ranch High School AFJROTC Banquet on May 25th. Compatriot Gary Newton presented Harini Akurathi with the CASSAR JROTC award, including the $1000 check. She was thrilled. The audience gave her an ovation. Compatriot Newton took the opportunity to speak about the SAR JROTC Outstanding Cadet Program, It was a great evening with guests reporting that Harini’s award was the “hit” of the banquet.
