2017 Cabrillo Landing Reinactment
The 54th Annual Cabrillo Festival was held on September 30, 2017 at Naval Base Point Loma. The annual festival celebrates the September 28, 1542 arrival of Juan Rodríquez Cabrillo aboard the San Salvador to “an enclosed harbor which was very good”. Cabrillo named it San Miguel. We know it today as San Diego. The landing is believed to have occurred at Ballast Point.
Juan Rodríquez Cabrillo was born in Palma de Micer Gilio (today Palma del Rio), Cordova, Spain. Sailing under an order by the Spanish King, Cabrillo led the first European expedition to explore what is now the west coast of the United States. His landing in San Diego Bay occurred 78 years before the Mayflower arrived at Cape Cod on the east coast of the United States.
A San Diego SAR Chapter display was manned by Chapter President Fred Hall, Color Guard Commander Ernest McCullough, and Compatriots Robert Smith and Philip Hinshaw. The display attracted many of the festival attendees, and several of them inquired about SAR membership qualifications.
The display was located near the House of Spain paella food court. The Cabrillo Festival is one of the three annual events that the San Diego Chapter celebrates in conjunction with the House of Spain. The other events are the annual Battle of San Diego Bay celebration, and the 4th of July celebration in Balboa Park.
