Youth & Teacher Programs
To meet the objectives of our organization, the National Society sponsors a number of programs dedicated to our nation’s youth. Our chapter is committed to supporting Sons of the American Revolution youth programs. Our key contacts and the programs are listed below.
Elementary School
For Elementary School students, our Americanism Elementary School Poster Contest is fun and instructive. This contest offers cash prizes to the winners who draw posters that depict an event during the Revolutionary War based on a specified theme. The posters ar are drawn on standard 22″ by 28″ poster paper. Prizes offered at National, State, and Chapter levels. The posters are judged on their originality, research on the theme, artistry, and relevance to the theme. Middle School
For Middle School Students, we participate in the California Society’s Middle School Brochure Contest where 8th graders write a short essay on the relevance of the Revolution to modern times. The essay is to be presented on a single sheet of 8 1/2″ x 11″ sheet of paper, folded in thirds. There are National, State and Chapter awards. High School
High School students compete in our Knight Essay Contest, writing a 750-word essay on any element of the Revolutionary War or the U.S. Constitution. Cash awards are presented at the Chapter, State, and National levels. Submission deadline is December 31st. The Joseph S. Rumbaugh Historical Oration Contest is designed to explore the influence of the Revolutionary War on present-day America. This is a national contest and contestants shall be in high school during the contest year. The contest typically takes place in February at our Chapter meeting or a special “judges only” meeting. Our coordinator can be contacted at: rumbaugh@sarsandiego.org Presentation must be made to a panel of judges in January or February, date to be set in December.
ROTC and JROTC
Every spring, our chapter awards medals to outstanding ROTC/JROTC departments, too. Our ROTC coordinator can be contacted at: rotc@sarsandiego.org or jrotc@sarsandiego.org for JROTC. Submissions must be made to SDSAR by February 1.
Sea Cadets and Sea Scouts
There are a number of awards available to Sea Cadets ans Sea Scouts. Our Chapter’s winners in 2021 and 2022 also won the California “Sea Cadet of the Year” Award. Our coordinator can be contacted at: cadet@sarsandiego.org Submissions must be made to SDSAR by February 1.
Eagle Scout Scholarship
This scholarship is open to all Eagle Scouts who are currently registered in an active unit and have not reached their 19th birthday during the year of application. Our coordinator can be contacted at: eaglescout@sarsandiego.org Submission deadline is November 1st.
Teachers
The Valley Forge Teacher Recognition Contest is open to all 5th Grade Elementary School Teachers, 8th Grade and High School American History Teachers, either public, private or parochial who teach the American Revolution. The selected teachers (up to two each year) will receive a trip to one of three Summer Graduate Teacher Workshops through the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. Submission to SDSAR deadline is March 15.
