A few months ago, our current Color Guard Commander Duncan Campbell, notified the Board of his plans to resign as of the end of July due to pressing family needs. To compound our loss of Color Guard leadership, our Deputy Commander, Skip Cox, also notified us that he can no longer continue in that role due to health reasons. Both members have provided years of superb service to our Chapter and their leadership and energy will be greatly missed. They are not leaving SAR or our Chapter, just reducing their workload.
Stepping into this void will be Compatriot Doug Wright who will assume the Color Guard Commander role effective August 1st. Below is more information on Doug, please join me in welcoming him and thank him for taking on this role for our Chapter.

Doug Wright is a father of four children and dedicated 24 years to the U.S. Navy in an enlisted capacity. His service includes two deployments during Operation Enduring Freedom and nine years forward-deployed with the U.S. Seventh Fleet in Japan. Post-active duty, Doug continues to support the Fleet as a civil servant at Navy Base San Diego.
Currently, Doug holds several leadership positions in heritage and community organizations:
- Senior Vice Commander for the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW)’s Pittenger Camp #21
- Genealogist and Color Guard Captain for the San Diego Chapter of the California Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (CASSAR)
- Secretary of the Board for the Humanist Fellowship of San Diego (HFSD)
- Endorsed Humanist Lay Leader with The Humanist Society
Doug’s involvement with the SUVCW and SAR stems from his desire to honor his family’s Revolutionary and Civil War legacy and forge meaningful connections with fellow descendants. Doug’s Revolutionary War ancestor, Ralph Schenck, served as a Private in Col. Quick’s New Jersey regiment under Capt. Baird, where he fought in the Battle of Monmouth.
Please welcome Doug in his new role, he will need the help of members to build up our Color Guard. While Duncan and Skip will participate in future events when they can we have other members that are taking a less active role.
