Another Excellent Meeting
Our April 22nd Chapter meeting was enjoyed by all! We returned to the Green Dragon Tavern & Museum in Carlsbad for our first breakfast meeting at this location, it will not be our last!
The after the normal introductory items, our 2nd Vice President, George Brewster, took the podium and spoke on political cartoons and provided an early American example with the Join or Die cartoon from the French & Indian War era. George also introduced our keynote speaker, Pulitzer Prize winner Steven Breen of the San Diego Union-Tribune newspaper. Steve’s address was on modern day editorial & political cartooning. His presentation included drawing caricatures of five recent Presidents.
Our student Essay contest winner, Savera Sekhon, was in attendance along with her mother and grandfather. Rob Welch introduced her to read her submission; “AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY PATRIOT” which explores the role of Thomas Jefferson during the Revolutionary War (click on the title to view her essay). Savera is enrolled in the Coastal Acadamy in Oceanside where she is in the 9th grade.
We also inducted two new members, Gabriel and his son Gianni. They are the son and grandson of member Gregory Campbell. The photo below shows three generations of Campbell San Diego Chapter members!
Skip Cox was presented with the America250 Bronze medal. Current members, Andrew and Peter Fagen are our newest LIFE members of SAR. They join 1 emeritus life member, 3 NSSAR life members and 42 CASSAR life members in our Chapter.
To round out the program, Jim McAdory presented his final chapter in the “Tory War” of North Carolina in 1781. The presentation was on the battle at Lindley’s Mill which resulted in the highest casualties of the war in North Carolina.
